Introduction & ApplicationCoal is a natural dark brown to black solid substance material, used as a fuel, formed from fossilized plants and consisting of amorphous carbon with various organic and some inorganic compounds. Recently, Coal as one of the main source of energies (beside electricity, fuel, gas and nuclear), have been widely used by most powerplants in Asia, namely Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Hongkong, India, Philippine, Thailand, Malaysia and certainly Indonesia. Older generations of power plants use mostly higher calorific values, whereas the newer power plants use lower calorific values, which the coals are still abundant in Asia. Traditional main users of coal, apart from the power plants are cement plant, paper plant, textile industries and steel industries. Indonesia, as now is the largest exporter of Steam Coal to the world, with estimate export volume of around 230 million MT in year 2010, iscomplementing each other with the neighboring country, Australia, whom is one of the largest thermal coal exporters in the world. Both Kalimantan and Sumatra are the two main producing coal islands in Indonesia, which the concessions can be divided into PKP2B (coal contract of works) and KP (coal concessions).
